PLOT HIGHLIGHTS: * Q (John de Lancie) tries the Enterprise crew for all the
crimes of mankind while an appearance from Admiral
                      McCoy (DeForest Kelley) brings surprises.
                 * Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett) pays an unexpected visit
to the Enterprise to arrange a marriage for Troi,

                 * The Ferengi, supercapitalists of the galaxy, pose an
                      alien threat to the Enterprise.
                 * Picard takes a turn on the holodeck as 1940s hard-
                      boiled detective Dixon Hill.
                 * Data meets -- and is nearly overtaken -- by his "twin"
                      android, Lore.
                 * When the Bynars hijack the Enterprise, Riker falls in

                      Starfleet Academy.
                 * Worf turns down the opportunity to serve in the
Klingon Defense Force, remaining aboard the
                      Enterprise.
                 * Tasha is killed by Armus, a sadistic being created from
the cast-off sins of his race.
                 * Picard is briefly reunited with Jenice (Michelle
Phillips), a woman he stood up 22 years ago when he
                      shipped out with Starfleet.
                 * The UFP tangles with the Romulans for the first time in
                      53 years.

originated as Marcha Hernandez. That name was changed
                 when Denise Crosby was cast.

"baby" is really an alien lifeform trying to learn more

                      (Joe Piscopo).
                 * Dr. Pulaski contracts a disease that generates
                      "hyperaging."
                 * Riker becomes the first Starfleet officer to serve
                      aboard a Klingon vessel.
                 * Wesley's first romance is with Salia, an allasomorph or
                      shape changer.
                 * Picard faces his own double from six hours into the
                      future.
                 * Riker refuses a command post on the Iries.
                 * When Data refuses to be disassembled for research
purposes, Picard makes an impassioned plea for him,
defending the android's rights in court.
                 * As the Enterprise comes under attack by their newest
threat, the Borg race, Guinan reveals that they
                      virtually killed all her people.
                 * Amidst the Betazoid "Phase" -- a midlife female cycle
that quadruples a woman's sex drive -- Lwaxana chases
Picard, and several others, for their affection on a

episode's I0.8 rating. When compared with network dramas,
it ranked among the top 10 in every key adult demographic,
as well as among teens, and became the number two hour-
long series among men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54,
second only to "L.A. Law," and outdelivering the much-
heralded "Twin Peaks." For women, its similar demographic
rankings surpassed such network powerhouses as "Dallas,"

Films named the series Best Television Program.

DID YOU KNOW?: At the beginning of the third season, a new main title
welcomed viewers each week, featuring an incoming route
from outside the Milky Way rather than a departure angle
                 from the solar system.

DID YOU KNOW?: A tale of two security chiefs: Marina Sirtis initially read for
the part of chief security officer Marcha Hernandez (which
later changed to Tasha Yar), but Gene Roddenberry decided
her appearance was more suited to the empathic alien
counselor. For the character who would be chief security
officer in later seasons -- Lt. Worf -- Michael Dorn was
initially only signed on for seven of the first 13 episodes.
